Terms and Conditions of Summer Scholarships |

The CU Hispanic Society Committee is accepting applications for its Full Scholarships to attend a Spanish Summer Course in Spain at Academia Isla in Salamanca. The COURSE INCLUDES: Intensive Spanish tuition 4 hours per day; all course materials; individual tutorials; conversation exchange (intercambio); conferences; workshops; a student card; use of library; diplomas and certificates of attendance; accommodation service; email and internet access; use of computers with CD burner, printer and scanner or connect your own; movies with subtitles using DVD video systems; travel office service; information about cultural events; free fax facilities; welcome reception with drinks; guided city tours; sports activities; Fiestas and events; tapas bars tours; loan of sporting/camping equipment and bikes; car booking service. In the case of the Scholarship for Avila, you will receive a Universidad de Salamanca Official Certificate showing course completion. EXCLUDED are: accommodation costs, although the Society can help you find a place through its network of current and past Members in Spain or with the Universidad de Salamanca or Academia Isla services; travel costs including airport or rail transfers in Spain, the Society can only provide guidance and advice to select the most convenient flights and internal transport in Spain; pocket money and anything else not specified above. DURATION and NUMBER of Scholarships will be decided according to the number of applications and standard of pre-selected applicants. For Academia Isla, there will be either TWO 2 weeks or ONE 4 weeks Scholarships will be awarded. The Committee also reserves the right to give FOUR 1 week Scholarships in case there were more than three outstanding candidates, after consulting them and reaching an agreement. DATES and LOCATION. These are flexible and can be chosen by successful applicants between: the months of July, August or September (effectively after the Cambridge University end of June Graduations until the start of Michaelmas Term). MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS for applicants: to be a Member of the Society; to have attended our Friday Spanish Lessons, one-to-one lessons with our qualified teacher and/or our Wednesday Conversation Evenings; to show commitment in promoting the Course and helping the Society by becoming a Committee Member when back in Cambridge (if applicable). LEVEL of SPANISH required for the Course can be any from Beginners to Advanced. In the case of complete beginners the Society will strongly encourage to achieve at least a basic level before attending the Course in order to make the most of it. You must have attended our Lessons and/or Conversation Evenings anyway to qualify. APPLICATION PROCEDURE: an Application Form sent via our Spanish Lessons Mailing List or available from the Society website, has to be electronically copied and pasted, filled in and emailed to cuhisplessons at gmail.com SELECTION CRITERIA in order of importance: reasons to apply for the Scholarship given in the Personal Statement section of the Application Form; a clear commitment in promoting the Course and becoming a Society Committee Member while in Cambridge (if applicable); number of Friday Spanish Lessons, one-to-one lessons with our qualified teacher and Wednesday Conversation Evenings attended since Michaelmas (October); applicants who are on a 3 or 4 year degree course or on a long term work contract and will still be in Cambridge next academic year will have priority over those who will not; people who are willing to write a short article in English or Spanish for our Magazine "La Transatlantica" about their experience in the course, will have more chances; preference will be given to Life Members over Yearly ones; other criteria the Committee may feel appropriate. SELECTION PROCEDURE: according to number and standard of applicants, the Committee will award Scholarships either basing the decision on the Application Form only or at a later stage from a number of pre-selected outstanding candidates. In this second case, candidates will be contacted and asked to attend a Conversation Evening before the end of Easter Term, where they will be questioned, then voting will take place to allocate Scholarships. In case of applicants with same level of selection criteria who attended different Society Spanish Lessons, one Scholarship for Beginners and one for Intermediate will be awarded. In order to ensure attendance of the Course, a deposit of £90 will be required from successful applicants, which will be given back at the beginning of Michaelmas Term (October) after showing an official certificate of attendance. If the number of applicants is sufficient, two reserve candidates will also be selected amongst those who did not receive the Scholarship, who will have to be available at short notice in case of illness or unforeseen circumstances preventing others to attend. In all cases the decision of the Committee is final. |

DISCLAIMER: the Society cannot be held responsible for any issues related to accommodation, travelling arrangements or anything during your stay not organised by us. No Committee Member will be necessarily present during the Course in Spain. Academia Isla or Salamanca University personnel will be in charge of all lessons/cultural activities, but the Society will try to help in any way possible from the UK if there are any problems. Although emergency medical care is free for EU nationals with an E111 form/card in Spain (also for others passport holders in the Andalucía region), everybody is advised to arrange their own travel/medical insurance. |
